One of Beaufort Street's best small bars.
Our rating:There's a reason small bars seem to be the talk of the town lately and Five Bar in Mt Lawley is definitely doing its part in adding to that reason. A stone’s throw away from a bunch of other popular Beaufort street favourites, Five is in a great location, almost equidistant from the city/northbridge and leederville. We headed down to five for an 'almost the end of the week' beer and a meal.
We arrived quite early and managed to grab a table near the back before it started filling up. I went up to the bar to get a few drinks and was amazed by the size of the drinks list (both wine and beer). Page after page of craft beer neatly categorised by style, I was in heaven! I decided to go with a mountain goat hightail ale (straight from the cask), probably the best decision i'd made all day, such a great flavoured amber ale with a mountain of hop flavours and a very subtle fruity twist. By the time I got back to the table we had already been provided with a few glasses of iced water and were asked if we wanted to order food.
The food menu was noticeably smaller than the drinks list, no complaints on our part, but still had an interesting range of offerings. Matt chose the Burger with aged maffra cheddar and I got the rare roast beef open sandwiches with coleslaw. We also got a side of hand-cut chips with curry mayo. The food took a little while to come out, not excessively long, but long enough to notice. More importantly, it was definitely worth the wait. There wasn't anything we could criticise, it was all so good! The roast beef sandwiches were amazing, big slices of rare roast beef on a baguette base with coleslaw and a light cream cheese, the burger was also great, the patty was cooked perfectly and the whole thing had a fantastic flavour. The chips were also a hit especially when paired with the inventive curry mayo.
Everything about this bar just works well together, the decor is really interesting and the large blackboards on the walls advertising weekly specials/recommended beer and wines are a nice touch and really add to the atmosphere. The service was fantastic, all staff were friendly, polite and really good at their jobs. Every time we came dangerously near to finishing our drinks someone would come over and offer to get us another one, it was almost the kind of service you'd expect if you were the only ones in the bar but it was quite busy so hats off to all the staff for doing such a good job. Value-wise its a bit on the pricier side of the spectrum but it is definitely worth spending that bit extra for the great food and service.
I really cannot wait to come back to Five for a drink and a meal, It’s that type of place you'd wish was your local and if you're lucky enough that it actually is, I am truly jealous.
